US Air Force Academy Falcon Stadium

Elevating Game Day Experience at the Air Force Academy
The Challenge
Originally constructed in the early 1960s, Falcon Stadium had remained largely unchanged for decades, offering few premium amenities and an outdated fan experience that did not reflect the prestige of the U.S. Air Force Academy. The Academy engaged HKS to create a modernization master plan and a detailed design for a new east-side club and concourse environment. The challenge was to elevate the fan experience, add premium seating and preserve the Academy’s iconic western views while working within the constraints of the existing structure and steep site.
The Design Solution
HKS reimagined how fans and cadets enter and experience Falcon Stadium. The design removed aging bleachers and a utilitarian east-side building to make way for a new club structure elevated above the main concourse. This created a distinctive arrival sequence through the new Heritage Plaza, a space that celebrates the Academy’s legacy and athletic history. The low-profile, tiered design protects sightlines to the “AIR FORCE” hillside letters, while the angular architecture, inspired by stealth aircraft, communicates precision and strength. The new east-side addition introduces 1,000 enclosed premium seats directly connected to a club lounge with upgraded food, beverage and hospitality offerings. Across the east-side concourse, improved seating, restrooms, concessions, accessibility features and a new banquet club transform the facility into a year-round destination for Academy and community events.
The Design Impact
As the first phase in Falcon Stadium’s long-term modernization, this renovation represents the largest athletic investment in Academy history and establishes a new model for service academy athletic venues. Completed in July 2023, the project enhances comfort and accessibility for spectators while expanding operational capacity for graduations, football and lacrosse games and major entertainment events in Southern Colorado. The repositioned cadet seating at the stadium’s center reinforces Academy traditions, while the Heritage Plaza provides a powerful space for reflection and pride. With increased premium seating, improved amenities and more efficient circulation, the stadium now offers a world-class experience for more than 30,000 visitors annually.
